TLDR Wearing a hijab may lead to earlier hair loss due to vitamin D deficiency and scalp conditions.
The study investigated the association between non-scarring alopecia and wearing the hijab, involving 125 hijab-wearing patients and 40 non-hijab-wearing women. The study found that hijab-wearing patients had a younger mean age of alopecia onset (31.5 years) compared to non-hijab wearers (37.3 years). It also suggested that vitamin D deficiency (with an odds ratio of 4.1) and seborrheic dermatitis (with an odds ratio of 2.9) significantly impact the development of telogen effluvium, a type of hair loss, in hijab-wearing patients. The study suggests targeting these risk factors to prevent hair loss in hijab-wearing patients.

Scalp biopsies are crucial for diagnosing hair loss conditions like Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia (DUPA) and retrograde hair loss, as treatments like finasteride and dutasteride may not be effective if other conditions are present. Combining PPAR-GAMMA agonists with retinoids could improve treatments for conditions like Lichen Planopilaris.

Topical minoxidil being a difficult product to apply, with users considering finasteride, RU58841, and oral minoxidil as alternative treatments for diffuse thinning hair. Other advice includes shaving the head in the first 3 months of using minoxidil and finding ways to apply it without saturating the hair.
