TLDR Higher MPV and CRP levels may indicate more severe alopecia areata.
The study involving 50 patients with alopecia areata found that mean platelet volume (MPV) and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels were significantly higher in these patients compared to 50 healthy controls and showed a moderate positive correlation with disease severity, as measured by the SALT score. Neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) did not correlate significantly with alopecia areata severity. The study suggests that MPV and CRP could be simple, cost-effective markers for assessing the severity of alopecia areata, although further research is needed to understand their clinical significance fully.
