TLDR The new surgical technique for vitiligo is effective, safe, and cost-efficient.
In the 2010 study, researchers introduced a new surgical technique called multimodal single-step vitiligo surgery (MMSSVS) to treat vitiligo, a skin condition with depigmented patches. The study included two female patients with stable vitiligo. MMSSVS combined three different grafting methods—suction blister grafting (SBG), split-thickness grafting (STG), and smash grafting (SG)—in one session. The first patient had 7% to 8% body surface area affected and the second had 4% to 5% body surface area affected; both had tried medical therapy with limited success. Following the MMSSVS procedure, both patients achieved over 90% repigmentation at the 1-month follow-up, without any postoperative complications. The study concluded that MMSSVS is an effective, safe, and cost-efficient treatment for vitiligo, particularly beneficial in settings with limited resources.
