TLDR Metformin helps induce ovulation in obese women with PCOS, but weight loss is still the main treatment.
This study investigated the effectiveness of Metformin in inducing ovulation in 60 obese, hirsute, infertile women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Participants were divided into two groups: both received clomiphene citrate, but Group B also received Metformin. Ovulation was assessed using transvaginal folliculometry and ovarian artery Doppler velocimetry. The results indicated that Metformin had a beneficial effect on ovulation induction in these women. The study concluded that while Metformin shows promise in treating insulin-resistant PCOS, its benefits for all women with PCOS remain uncertain. Weight loss was emphasized as the primary recommendation for treating PCOS.
