Metabolic and Functional Alterations Associated with COVID-19
January 2023

TLDR Lower LDL-c levels predict higher COVID-19 mortality.
The study investigates the metabolic and functional alterations associated with COVID-19, focusing on lipid profiles and their impact on patient outcomes. Conducted at the Hospital Clínico Universitario de Valladolid, it included 654 patients. Key findings indicate that lower LDL-c levels are associated with higher mortality, with LDL-c being a significant predictor of 30-day mortality. The study also highlights the role of oxidative stress and inflammation, with lower cholesterol levels and higher inflammatory markers in patients compared to healthy controls. Over a median follow-up of 79 days, patients showed recovery in lipid levels, but those with higher lipid peroxidation had worse outcomes. The research underscores the importance of lipid profiles in understanding COVID-19 outcomes and suggests that persistent symptoms like dyspnea may be linked to lower functional capacity and increased fatigue.
