TLDR Mesotherapy is generally safe but can cause adverse reactions due to its varied use and lack of standardization; individualized treatment is needed for these complications.
The review article "Mesotherapy: Safety profile and management of complications" from 2019 analyzed articles published between 1992 and 2018 to summarize complications related to mesotherapy, a procedure that involves injecting active substances into the dermis and subcutaneous tissue to treat various local medical and cosmetic conditions. Despite being considered relatively safe, the study found that a range of adverse reactions can occur due to the procedure's wide application and lack of standardization. The management of these complications was found to be mostly individualized. The authors concluded that larger systematic studies are needed to adequately evaluate the safety profile of mesotherapy and to determine standardized therapy parameters to minimize the risk of potential adverse reactions.
