TLDR Methadone may worsen liver fibrosis in males with HCV.
In a study of 257 male veterans with chronic HCV infection, researchers investigated the impact of medications altering sex hormone balance on liver disease progression. The study found that methadone use was significantly associated with a 4.5-fold increased risk of advanced liver fibrosis, while no significant association was observed between anti-androgen use and liver disease severity. The findings suggested that methadone could exacerbate liver fibrosis in HCV-infected males, highlighting the need for further research in larger populations to confirm these results.
