TLDR COVID-19 symptoms range from mild to severe, with older adults at higher risk.
This literature review from 2020 aimed to describe the clinical manifestations and complications of COVID-19, identifying 71 relevant articles from an initial 1,066. COVID-19 presented a range of severity from mild to severe-critical, particularly affecting those over 65 years old, with or without comorbidities. Common symptoms included fever, cough, and fatigue, while less common symptoms were chills, sore throat, headache, muscle/joint pain, loss of taste and smell, gastrointestinal issues, nasal congestion, palpitations, chest tightness, and pleuritic pain. The symptomatology in children differed from adults, generally being benign with low mortality. The review highlighted the challenge of clinical evaluation due to non-specific symptoms but emphasized the importance of understanding the disease's natural history for accurate clinical context.
