Management of the Adverse Effects of Targeted Therapy for Cancer

    Hyewon Ryu
TLDR Targeted cancer therapies can cause new side effects, requiring careful monitoring and management to ensure patient safety.
Advances in targeted cancer therapies, such as monoclonal antibodies and small molecules, have shifted the side effect profile from classical chemotherapy-induced toxicities to new toxicities, including dermatologic, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, endocrine, ocular, and pulmonary issues. While most side effects like skin rash, diarrhea, and stomatitis are mild and manageable, rare and severe toxicities such as pneumonitis and cardiotoxicities can occur, necessitating early detection and intervention. Effective management involves patient monitoring, dose adjustments, and supportive care, with serious cases requiring therapy discontinuation and corticosteroid use to maintain patient survival and quality of life.
