The study found that administering toxic doses of cortisone acetate to immature rats on a synthetic diet led to retarded growth, alopecia, and death. However, these adverse effects were significantly mitigated by including desiccated whole liver at 10% of the diet. The protective effects of the liver were attributed to factors distinct from known B vitamins.
