TLDR Reducing accidents and treating vascular diseases can lower the need for life-impacting amputations.
Limb amputations, despite medical advancements, remained a crucial life-saving procedure with significant psychological, functional, and social impacts on patients. They were performed both in emergencies and as elective surgeries, addressing either distal segments or entire limbs. Specialized teams were essential to achieve optimal functional and aesthetic outcomes compatible with prosthetic correction. The document highlighted the main causes of amputations and preventive measures, emphasizing that reducing traffic and workplace accidents and effectively treating chronic vascular diseases could decrease the need for amputations, which, while life-saving, had a devastating impact on patients and society.
