TLDR The LGBTQ+ STEM @UCL Network helps increase visibility and support for LGBTQ+ individuals in STEM at University College London.
The LGBTQ+ STEM @UCL Network, founded in 2020, is a student-staff partnership at University College London (UCL) that aims to promote the work of UCL staff and students who identify as LGBTQ+ in STEM fields. The network was created in response to a lack of visibility and openness about personal lives among LGBTQ+ staff at UCL, with over 40% of respondents in a 2017 survey reporting they did not discuss their personal lives openly at work. The network has grown to over 200 members and has organized events relevant to LGBTQ+ scientists, including social events, talks, workshops, and a festival. The network also plans to host in-person social events and collaborate with other LGBTQ+ and EDI initiatives to raise awareness of the challenges faced by marginalized identities. The network emphasizes the importance of a visible LGBTQ+ presence in STEM disciplines to foster a supportive and productive environment.
