TLDR Geranium pyrenaicum extracts show potential for cancer, antiviral, and enzyme inhibition treatments.
The study analyzed the chemical composition and bioactive properties of four extracts from Geranium pyrenaicum using LC-ESI-QTOF-MS/MS. The aqueous extract, rich in phenolic content, showed the highest antioxidant activity and selectivity towards cancer cell lines, particularly FaDu cells. The methanolic extract demonstrated significant antiviral activity against HSV-1 and inhibited tyrosinase and α-glucosidase activities. Ethyl acetate extracts inhibited cholinesterase and α-amylase enzymes. A total of 56 compounds, including ellagitannins and gallic acid derivatives, were identified, highlighting the plant's potential for developing innovative phyto-pharmaceuticals. Further research was recommended to identify the most active compounds and confirm their efficacy.
