TLDR Overexpressing the Tβ4 gene in goats can increase cashmere production.
The study explored the use of transgenic technology to increase cashmere yield in goats by utilizing the piggyBac transposon system. Researchers successfully generated five transgenic cashmere goats through somatic cell nuclear transfer, using donor fibroblasts transfected with a vector containing the thymosin beta-4 (Tβ4) gene, driven by a hair follicle-specific promoter. The Tβ4 gene was effectively integrated into the goat genome, and histological analysis showed that these transgenic goats had a higher secondary to primary hair follicle ratio compared to wild type goats, indicating an increase in secondary hair follicles. The findings suggested that Tβ4 overexpression could be a viable method to enhance cashmere production.
