TLDR Jaw wiring helps with weight loss but long-term habits are needed to keep it off.
The 1977 study investigated jaw wiring as a treatment for severe obesity in 17 patients, resulting in a median weight loss of 25.3 kg over six months, similar to intestinal bypass surgery. Despite minor inconveniences and no major complications, two-thirds of the patients regained some weight after the wires were removed. The study concluded that jaw wiring was an effective method for weight loss but highlighted the necessity of long-term behavioral changes to maintain the results.
