TLDR IsoPSA test works accurately even if patients take certain prostate medications.
The study involving 888 men aged 50 and above found that the IsoPSA test's performance in detecting prostate cancer is unaffected by the use of 5-alpha reductase inhibitors (5-ARIs) and alpha-blockers, which are common medications for benign prostatic hyperplasia. IsoPSA maintained consistent sensitivity across all groups, with increased specificity in patients using alpha-blockers. Although the small sample size for the 5-ARI cohort (n=40) may limit the detection of minor changes, the findings suggest that IsoPSA is a reliable diagnostic tool for prostate cancer detection in patients taking these medications.
