Effects of Reducing Tissue Iron Deposits on Cardiovascular Risk Factors in Patients with Functional Ovarian Hyperandrogenism

TLDR Reducing iron levels didn't improve heart health or metabolism in women with certain ovarian issues.
This study investigated the effects of reducing tissue iron stores through scheduled phlebotomies on cardiovascular risk factors in 33 women with functional ovarian hyperandrogenism. Despite the safe reduction of iron levels, there was no improvement in insulin sensitivity or other metabolic parameters. The intervention led to a decrease in non-enzymatic antioxidant capacity, but no adverse events were reported. The findings suggested that while iron depletion is safe, it did not enhance the cardio-metabolic profile in women without known metabolic alterations or hyperferritinemia, and may reduce antioxidant capacity.
