TLDR Women with hair loss may benefit from higher iron levels.
The systematic review and meta-analysis conducted by Treister-Goltzman et al. examined the association between iron deficiency and nonscarring alopecia in women. The study included 36 studies with a total of 10,029 participants. It found that women with nonscarring alopecia had significantly lower ferritin levels, with a mean difference of -18.51 ng/dL compared to women without the condition. The prevalence of low ferritin levels (10 to 15 ng/dL and below) was 21%. The study concluded that women experiencing hair loss could benefit from maintaining higher ferritin levels.
