Intralesional Platelet-Rich Plasma Injection in Patients with Recalcitrant Alopecia Areata

    Mert Aydogan
TLDR PRP injections are safe and effective for alopecia areata, but steroids are still the preferred treatment.
The study evaluated the effectiveness of intralesional platelet-rich plasma (PRP) versus intralesional steroid (ILS) injections in 75 patients with alopecia areata. After three treatment sessions, PRP showed statistically significant improvement in hair regrowth compared to ILS, with 83.4% of PRP patients experiencing a very good response by the 6th month. However, PRP also had a higher incidence of minor side effects, such as itching and pain, compared to ILS. Despite PRP's effectiveness, its superiority over ILS is not fully established, leaving ILS as the preferred first-line treatment.
