TLDR Topical minoxidil effectively and safely treats female pattern hair loss, but other treatments need more research.
The study aimed to determine the effectiveness and safety of available treatments for female pattern hair loss. The researchers searched various databases and included 22 randomized controlled trials with 2349 participants. The results showed that topical minoxidil was effective and safe in treating female pattern hair loss, with a greater proportion of participants reporting moderate hair regrowth compared to placebo. However, most of the other interventions evaluated had limited evidence of efficacy or safety. The study suggests the need for further direct comparison studies of minoxidil 5% applied once a day and additional well-designed randomized controlled trials investigating other treatment options.
