TLDR There's no clear link between female pattern hair loss, insulin resistance, and metabolic syndrome.
The 2015 study involving 105 women, 55 with androgenetic alopecia (AGA) and 50 without, found no significant relationship between AGA, insulin resistance, and metabolic syndrome. Insulin resistance, calculated using the HOMA-IR method, was found in 20% of the AGA group and 12% of the control group, a difference that was not statistically significant. Metabolic syndrome was identified in 9.1% of the AGA group and none in the control group, but this difference was also not statistically significant. The study suggested that further research with larger sample sizes is needed to clarify the relationship between AGA and insulin resistance.

Scalp biopsies are crucial for diagnosing hair loss conditions like Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia (DUPA) and retrograde hair loss, as treatments like finasteride and dutasteride may not be effective if other conditions are present. Combining PPAR-GAMMA agonists with retinoids could improve treatments for conditions like Lichen Planopilaris.
