Injudicious Use of Topical Steroids: A Misconception in the Treatment of Patients with Acne Vulgaris

    Farrukh Aslam Khalid, Rushqia Mukhtar
TLDR Using topical steroids for acne is a bad idea and causes many skin problems.
The study conducted at Pakistan Railway Hospital in 2012 found that 62% of 110 acne vulgaris patients used topical steroids, with betamethasone valerate being the most common. The use of these steroids led to various side effects in 50 patients, including aggravation of acne (36%), perioral dermatitis (24%), telangiectasias (16%), increased facial hair growth (14%), tinea incognito (6%), and acne rosacea (4%). The study concluded that using topical steroids for acne is a misconception and is associated with significant cutaneous side effects.

Other users suggested trying different treatments and getting a blood test to check for underlying conditions.
