TLDR Inflammation from nasal surgery temporarily increases sympathetic nervous system activity, but balance is restored within a week.
The study aimed to evaluate the connection between experimental inflammation following surgical trauma to the nasal septum and the imbalance of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) using 12 male Wistar rats. Heart rate variability (HRV) was analyzed before and after surgery to assess ANS state. The findings indicated that inflammation from septoplasty significantly increased the influence of higher autonomic centers on cardiovascular regulation, with a marked rise in vasomotor center activity and baroreflex regulation. There was a dominance of sympathetic nervous system (SNS) activity over parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) activity, leading to reduced PNS influence on cardiac activity. However, the balance between SNS and PNS returned to a physiological state by the end of the first week post-surgery.
