TLDR Impulsiveness is common across various psychiatric disorders and linked to many psychological symptoms.
The study investigated impulsiveness in 179 psychiatric in-patients diagnosed with various disorders, including Panic Disorder, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, other Anxiety Disorders, Depressive Disorders, Bipolar Disorders, Substance-Related Disorders, and Cluster B and C Personality Disorders. Using the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale Version 11 and the Symptom Check List-90, the research found that impulsiveness did not significantly differ among the diagnostic groups but was positively correlated with all psychopathological dimensions measured by the SCL-90-R and with manic symptomatology. The findings indicate that impulsiveness is a common psychopathological trait across different psychiatric conditions and is closely linked to a range of psychopathological symptoms, suggesting that treatments effective for mania might also address impulsiveness in various psychiatric disorders.
