TLDR Eyebrow and eyelash hair loss in alopecia areata worsens quality of life.
The study investigated the impact of eyebrow and eyelash hair loss on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) among 2,026 patients with alopecia areata (AA) across five European countries. The participants, with a mean age of 36 years and 52% male, completed HRQoL assessments, including the Skindex-16 AA and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). Results showed that 27% had eyebrow involvement and 17% had eyelash involvement. Patients with eyebrow involvement reported significantly worse HRQoL, with higher scores on Skindex-16, HADS-Depression, and HADS-Anxiety scales, compared to those without eyebrow involvement. Similarly, eyelash involvement was associated with diminished HRQoL. The study highlights the importance of clinical assessment of eyebrow and eyelash hair loss to determine AA severity and manage treatment effectively.
