Immunohistochemical study of hair follicle stem cells in regenerated hair follicles induced by Wnt10b
January 2016
in “International Journal of Medical Sciences”
TLDR Increasing Wnt10b levels can help grow new hair follicles in mice.
In the 2016 study, researchers found that Wnt10b overexpression promoted the proliferation of hair follicle stem cells (HFSCs) and led to the regeneration of hair follicles in mice. The study, which involved 60 mice, showed that Wnt10b activation resulted in larger hair follicles with normal functioning HFSCs and maintained canonical Wnt signaling, particularly in hair precortex cells. The activation of the Wnt signaling pathway was confirmed by the translocation of β-catenin to the nucleus in these cells. These findings suggest potential therapeutic applications for hair loss and other hair follicle regeneration-related conditions. The research was funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the Municipal Natural Science Foundation of Chongqing.
