A Phase 1b/2a clinical trial conducted by Histogen Inc. evaluated the safety and effectiveness of Hair Stimulating Complex (HSC), a formulation derived from human cells, in treating male pattern baldness. The trial involved 36 subjects with Norwood Hamilton scores of 3V, 4, and 5, who received intradermal injections of HSC at baseline, 6, and 12 weeks. The study was double-blind and randomized, with a 2:1 ratio of HSC to control subjects. Results at 18 weeks showed that 75% of subjects treated with HSC experienced new hair growth and a halt in hair loss, while 63% of control subjects continued to lose hair. No serious adverse reactions were reported, indicating that HSC injections are safe and effective for androgenetic alopecia. These findings support the progression to a larger phase 2 dosing study.
