TLDR Combining terbinafine and mitotane effectively treated a schnauzer's skin infection and hormone disorder.
A 4-year-old female miniature schnauzer was diagnosed with pituitary-dependent hyperadrenocorticism (PDH) and a severe Trichophyton mentagrophytes infection, presenting symptoms such as generalized alopecia, thick crusting, and mild pruritus. Despite normal liver enzyme levels, tests confirmed PDH, and fungal cultures identified the infection within 4 days. Histological examination showed severe skin changes with heavy fungal colonization. Treatment with oral terbinafine and mitotane over 3 months led to hair regrowth and normalized ACTH stimulation test results, with negative fungal cultures after 6 months. The study concluded that the combination of terbinafine and mitotane was a safe and effective treatment for PDH with dermatophytosis, as no adverse effects were observed.
