TLDR Topical iodine can regenerate and control human scar tissue.
The study explored the use of topical Lugol’s iodine solution to regenerate human scar tissue. Initial application on a 50-year-old facial scar in 1997 showed promising results, leading to further tests on three more surgical scars in 2005. Within 3 days of iodine application, all scars began regenerating, and the process could be controlled by starting or stopping the iodine treatment. The study found that iodine induced hair growth in and around scars, which played a crucial role in delivering regenerative material to scar tissues. Two types of regenerative material were identified: white and globular, with their appearance and behavior influenced by iodine content. The study concluded that topical iodine could initiate, control, and complete human scar regeneration, supporting the initial hypothesis.
