TLDR Hair keratin doesn't significantly affect rat organ function but may help detect early rejection through blood changes.
The study aimed to evaluate the histocompatibility of hair keratin artificial material and its effects on rats. Fifty-four Wistar albino rats were divided into three groups and injected with hair keratin, general hair, or normal saline. Results showed that the general hair group had a significant increase in blood platelets and leucocytes, while the hair keratin and normal saline groups showed no significant differences. No significant differences were observed among the groups regarding heart and liver function, which initially increased and then normalized. After 30 days, GSH-Px activity increased significantly before returning to normal after 45 days. The study suggested that platelet and leucocyte counts could serve as early rejection indicators.
