TLDR Prepubertal girls with hypertrichosis have more sensitive androgen receptors, leading to increased body hair growth.
The study examined 42 prepubertal girls with hypertrichosis and 29 control girls, finding that those with hypertrichosis had lower SHBG levels and a higher prevalence of androgen-sensitive haplotypes, despite similar serum gonadotropins and sex steroids between groups. This suggested that enhanced androgen receptor sensitivity, rather than elevated androgen levels, contributed to excessive body hair growth in these girls. The study recommended further research on androgen receptor methylation to better understand its role in hypertrichosis.
