TLDR Bacopa monnieri, or Brahmi, is a traditional herb that may improve memory and treat various conditions, but more research is needed.
The review article "In Quest of the Mysterious Holistic Vedic Herb Bacopa monnieri (L.) Pennell" provides a comprehensive overview of Bacopa monnieri, a traditional herb used in Ayurvedic, Siddha, and Unani medicine for treating brain and nerve exhaustion and impaired memory. The herb, also known as Brahmi, has gained global popularity due to its nootropic properties and effectiveness as a memory enhancer. The review compiles pharmacobotanical and pharmacognostical descriptions, ethnoarchaeological data, and nanotechnology domination to enhance Brahmi micropropagation and secondary metabolite biosynthesis. The herb shows potential in treating various illnesses, including neuro-pharmacological conditions, depression, inflammation, hepatoprotective, and antidiabetic. Brahmi's antioxidant ability may explain its antistress, immunomodulatory, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging benefits. However, further clinical trials and research are needed, particularly to explore its potential as an anxiolytic, antidepressant, anti-epileptic therapy, and a treatment for antiepileptic drugs side effects.
