TLDR Hair transplantation is safe and effective for permanent hair loss due to scarring, with high patient satisfaction.
In the study titled "Hair Transplantation in Cicatricial Alopecia: A Preliminary Report," researchers evaluated the feasibility and cosmetic outcomes of hair transplantation in patients with cicatricial alopecia, which is a form of permanent hair loss due to scarring. The study involved 11 patients who underwent autologous hair transplant using the follicular unit extraction (FUE) method over a two-year period from May 2010 to May 2012. The patients, who had either primary or secondary cicatricial alopecia, were selected based on the stability of their condition, with primary alopecia patients having stable disease for about two years and secondary alopecia patients having mature scars. The results, assessed one year post-procedure, were based on patient satisfaction, which ranged from satisfactory to excellent. The study concluded that hair transplantation is a safe and effective option for patients with cicatricial alopecia, offering excellent cosmetic results and high patient satisfaction.

Scalp biopsies are crucial for diagnosing hair loss conditions like Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia (DUPA) and retrograde hair loss, as treatments like finasteride and dutasteride may not be effective if other conditions are present. Combining PPAR-GAMMA agonists with retinoids could improve treatments for conditions like Lichen Planopilaris.

Han Bio plans to start clinical trials for a new hair multiplication technology this year, which could significantly reduce the cost and time of hair transplantation. The technology uses a single hair strand to cultivate enough cells for 30,000 hair strands.

      community Verteporfin and Microneedling

      in Treatments 6 months ago
Clinical studies by Dr. Barghouthi and Dr. Bloxham indicate that Verteporfin, when used with FUE and FUT hair transplantation methods, shows promise in hair follicle regeneration and minimal scarring due to its ability to inhibit Yes-associated protein (YAP). Microneedling at depths of 3-3.5mm, combined with Verteporfin, could potentially reactivate dormant follicles, although the optimal dosage and application method are still under investigation. Concerns remain about the DHT sensitivity of regenerated follicles, highlighting the need for further research to optimize trauma levels and Verteporfin concentrations to achieve effective and scar-free hair regeneration.
