TLDR Non-scarring hair loss is common in children and needs attention for cosmetic reasons.
The study retrospectively evaluated hair and scalp diseases in 159 pediatric patients out of 2,641 under 18 years old at a dermatology clinic. The mean age was 9.92 years, with 90 females and 69 males. The most common conditions were seborrheic dermatitis (26.4%), alopecia areata (19.5%), tinea capitis (13.2%), telogen effluvium (11.9%), and psoriasis (11.9%). Hair loss was observed in 47.8% of cases. Diagnostic methods included hair pull tests (72.3%), trichoscopy (40.9%), and biopsies (5.0%). The study concluded that non-scarring acquired alopecias were the most prevalent in children, highlighting the importance of addressing hair loss due to cosmetic concerns.
