TLDR Hair transplant techniques and scalp micropigmentation can effectively hide scars and hair loss after cranial surgery.
In 2018, a study was conducted on patients who had undergone cranial surgery and were experiencing hair loss or visible scarring as a result. The study found that techniques such as Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) and scalp micropigmentation (SMP) were effective in camouflaging these scars. FUT involves transplanting hair in its natural groupings into the scar, while SMP involves injecting dermal pigment into the scar. The study involved several cases, including a 27-year-old male with male pattern hair loss (MPHL) who received 1,384 follicular unit grafts, a 20-year-old male who received 519 grafts and later an additional 1,021 grafts due to further hairline recession, a 36-year-old male who received 787 and then 808 grafts to cover a large scar, and a 39-year-old male who underwent SMP. The results showed that these techniques were successful in reducing the visibility of scars and improving the patients' aesthetic appearance.

Scalp biopsies are crucial for diagnosing hair loss conditions like Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia (DUPA) and retrograde hair loss, as treatments like finasteride and dutasteride may not be effective if other conditions are present. Combining PPAR-GAMMA agonists with retinoids could improve treatments for conditions like Lichen Planopilaris.

      community Verteporfin and Microneedling

      in Treatments 6 months ago
Clinical studies by Dr. Barghouthi and Dr. Bloxham indicate that Verteporfin, when used with FUE and FUT hair transplantation methods, shows promise in hair follicle regeneration and minimal scarring due to its ability to inhibit Yes-associated protein (YAP). Microneedling at depths of 3-3.5mm, combined with Verteporfin, could potentially reactivate dormant follicles, although the optimal dosage and application method are still under investigation. Concerns remain about the DHT sensitivity of regenerated follicles, highlighting the need for further research to optimize trauma levels and Verteporfin concentrations to achieve effective and scar-free hair regeneration.
