TLDR Primary care should recognize and treat hair loss in hijab-wearing individuals with cultural sensitivity.
The article discusses the issue of traction alopecia (TA) in hijab-wearing individuals, emphasizing the importance of recognizing and addressing this condition in primary care. TA is caused by continuous or intermittent stress on the hair root, often presenting as symmetrical hair loss at the frontal hairline. Early signs include perifollicular erythema and pustules, which can lead to permanent scarring if untreated. The article highlights the need for cultural sensitivity during examinations and suggests preventive measures such as avoiding tight hairstyles and using topical treatments like minoxidil. For severe cases, referral to dermatology and potential hair transplantation may be necessary. Recommendations for respectful care of hijab-wearing patients are provided to ensure their comfort and modesty during medical evaluations.
