TLDR Maca root extract protects hair follicles and promotes hair growth.
The study demonstrated that Maca hydrolysate, an extract rich in oligosaccharides and peptides from Maca root, protected hair follicles from oxidative and inflammatory stress and promoted hair growth. In vitro and ex vivo models showed that the extract decreased reactive oxygen species and PGE2 release in stressed human follicle dermal papilla cells, indicating anti-inflammatory properties. Additionally, it induced the production of FGF7 and beta-catenin, suggesting hair growth promotion, and extended the anagen phase while delaying catagen. These findings suggested that Maca hydrolysate could be beneficial in products aimed at managing hair loss.
