TLDR Hair growth can be influenced by manipulating keratin and growth factor genes.
The chapter on "Hair Follicle Keratins" summarized the protein structures in the different cell layers of the hair follicle, as revealed by electron microscopic studies conducted over 30 years ago. It highlighted the various differentiation pathways of follicle keratinocytes and discussed the potential of using isolated and sequenced keratin genes as transgenes to express them specifically in their normal hair follicle locations. Additionally, the chapter emphasized the significance of growth factor genes in hair growth, suggesting that their overexpression or ablation could help investigate their roles in hair follicle morphogenesis and hair growth.
