TLDR Repeated dyeing and shampooing cause hair color loss and damage.
The study investigated the effects of multiple oxidative dyeing and shampooing cycles on hair dye deposition, color loss, and hair damage. Using various techniques such as ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry, reflectance light microscopy, infrared spectroscopic imaging, atomic force microscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry, the researchers measured dye leaching kinetics, dye distribution, and structural damage in both pigmented and nonpigmented hair. They found that repeated dyeing and washing led to significant dye loss and damage to the hair's cuticle and cortex, affecting the internal proteins and surface properties of the hair. The study highlighted the role of melanin in influencing dye deposition and leaching processes.
