TLDR Hair loss can have various causes and treatments vary in effectiveness.
Congenital alopecia could occur alone or with other congenital disorders. Finasteride was effective in treating androgenetic alopecia in men but was contraindicated for women at risk of pregnancy due to potential fetal feminization. Its effectiveness in women with female pattern hair loss was variable. Alopecia areata, an autoimmune disorder, caused hair loss in defined skin areas, while hair pulling resulted in bizarrely shaped bald patches. Telogen effluvium led to diffuse hair loss, and young children could develop hair loss from friction against their pillows.
