TLDR Modifying gut bacteria may help treat and prevent osteoarthritis.
This systematic review analyzes the relationship between gut microbiota (GM) and osteoarthritis (OA) through a bibliometric approach, identifying 192 articles from 2011 to 2024. The study notes a significant increase in research, particularly from China and the USA, and suggests that GM modulation could be a promising therapeutic strategy for OA. It emphasizes the role of GM in OA pathogenesis via mechanisms like intestinal barrier integrity and inflammation. Future research should focus on dietary regulation and GM transplantation as interventions, and integrate multi-omics approaches to better understand GM's impact on OA. Despite limitations, the study provides valuable insights for advancing research in this field.
