TLDR GTL1 is needed to control root hair growth and prevent problems when there are too many nutrients.
The study "GTL1 is required for a robust root hair growth response to avoid nutrient overloading" found that the growth of wild-type Arabidopsis plants, particularly root hair growth, is significantly suppressed with increased nutrient availability. The researchers discovered that RHD6 subfamily genes, which promote root hair growth, are down-regulated in nutrient-rich conditions. Conversely, defects in GTL1 and DF1, which inhibit root hair growth, lead to weak and swollen root hairs when excess nutrients are present. Overexpression of RSL4, an RHD6 subfamily gene, results in swollen root hairs under nutrient overload, but mutation of RSL4 in gtl1-1 df1-1 restores the root hair swelling phenotype. The data suggests that GTL1 and DF1 prevent unnecessary root hair formation by repressing RSL4 under conditions of excess nutrients.
