TLDR The cell culture medium "RPMI" might slightly improve hair graft survival, but not by a significant amount.
In a letter to the editor, Dr. James M. Swinehart discussed his evaluation of the cell culture medium "RPMI" for enhancing graft survival in hair transplantation surgery. Over a three-year period, he found that the medium may have slightly improved graft survival, but the results were not statistically significant. This information had been previously presented at the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery meeting in 1997 and in the Hair Transplant Forum International. Dr. Swinehart suggested that those interested in further evaluating graft survival should refer to the article mentioned for more information.
