TLDR Alopecia areata cases have increased globally, affecting mostly women aged 30-34, with links to other health issues.
Alopecia areata (AA) affects about 2% of the global population and is linked to genetic, immunological, and environmental factors, with significant psychological impacts. This study analyzed data from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2021 to assess global trends in AA incidence and prevalence from 1990 to 2021, revealing an increase in absolute cases but a slight decline in age-standardized incidence rates. The highest incidence was observed in North America, Southeast Asia, and Australia, particularly among females and those aged 30-34. Significant comorbidities include atopic dermatitis, iron deficiency, and depressive disorders, with regional variations. The study emphasizes the need for further research into comorbidities and targeted interventions to address AA's physical and psychological impacts.
