TLDR Certain genetic variations in IL-16 may increase the risk of alopecia areata.
This study examined the genetic association of IL-16 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) with alopecia areata (AA) in Diyala Province, Iraq, involving 51 AA patients and 50 healthy controls. It found non-significant increases in IL-16 serum levels in AA patients. The GG genotype and G allele of rs11325 were non-significantly higher in patients, while the TC and CC genotypes and C allele of rs1131445 were significantly higher. These findings suggest that specific IL-16 SNPs may be risk factors for AA, emphasizing the need for further genetic research on cytokines in AA susceptibility.
