TLDR Primary care providers should understand Geschlechtsinkongruenz to offer better care for transitioning individuals.
The article discusses the increasing number of individuals with Geschlechtsinkongruenz (GI) seeking primary care due to the de-psychiatrization of GI, particularly following the ICD-11 classification, and growing societal acceptance. GI often leads to Geschlechtsdysphorie (GD), causing significant distress and prompting individuals to pursue social and/or medical transition steps. Some interventions require lifelong follow-up, which can be managed in primary care settings. The article emphasizes the importance of primary care providers having foundational knowledge of GI, including its definition, diagnosis, and transition options, as well as common surgical procedures and potential complications, to provide optimal care for this patient group.
