TLDR Gore-Tex is effective for severe congenital ptosis, with the open approach better for no lid crease and the closed approach better for a preserved crease.
This study compared the functional and cosmetic outcomes of open versus closed frontalis sling techniques using Gore-Tex in treating severe congenital ptosis in 20 eyes of 13 patients. The open approach (group I) involved a skin crease incision, while the closed approach (group II) used supraciliary incisions. Both methods significantly improved palpebral fissure width and marginal reflex distance (p=0.001). Group II had better functional outcomes, whereas group I had superior cosmetic results. The closed approach also had a shorter mean operative time (18.1±2.4 min) compared to the open approach (30.2±3.1 min). No recurrences or severe complications were reported. The study concluded that Gore-Tex is effective for severe congenital ptosis, recommending the open approach for cases without a lid crease and the closed approach for those with a preserved crease.
