TLDR Hair is important for social and sexual communication in humans.
The hair follicle, an infolding of the superficial epithelium enclosing the dermal papilla, was responsible for the formation and production of hair fibers. While hair played a crucial role in the survival and evolution of many mammalian species, in humans, it had no vital function but was significant in social and sexual communications. This importance was evident in the interest in hair cosmetics and the number of people seeking medical advice for hair problems.
