TLDR The conclusion is that hair transplant surgery should use microscopically dissected natural hair groupings and some new terms were suggested for clarity.
In 2007, Bernstein, Rassman, and Limmer discussed the importance of follicular unit transplantation (FUT), a hair restoration surgery method that transplants hair in its naturally occurring, individual follicular units. They introduced four new terms: Follicular Family Unit, FU Pairing, FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction), and FIT (Follicular Isolation Technique), and suggested abandoning the terms FU Coupling, DFUs, and MFUs due to confusion. They emphasized that FUT should consist of microscopically dissected follicular units. The document also discussed the use of a device like the Haber Tissue Spreader, which separates around follicular units, and the use of single follicular units, Families, and grafts containing two follicular units in certain circumstances.
