TLDR Experts met to improve care for ichthyosis patients in Spain.
The First Symposium of Ichthyosis Experts in Spain, held on June 22, 2012, focused on structuring care for ichthyosis patients by discussing clinical, molecular, and social aspects of the disorder. Experts highlighted the severe impact of ichthyosis, particularly Harlequin ichthyosis, on patients' lives and the necessity for multidisciplinary care and genetic diagnosis. Effective management strategies included maintaining skin moisture and hydroelectrolyte balance, though long-term care with daily topical treatments was often challenging. Advances in genetic understanding and new treatments, such as enzyme replacement therapy, were discussed. The symposium emphasized the need for specialized care centers in Spain and continued research and collaboration to improve patient outcomes and support systems.
